Building the printer rails BELT ISSUES COMING OFF!!

Well I staying up late last night, again. I built all three sides of the printer rails. Bottom motor mount, belt spreader pulley and upper end pulley.

I connected the belt to the carriage.

End pulley connected

Motor end and belt spreader

MOTION UP AND DOWN WAS SMOOTH - BUT BELTS FALLING OFF THE END PULLEY - UPON MOVING THE CARRIAGE UP AND DOWN - TWO TURNS OF THE END PULLEY!!

ON ALL THREE SIDE ASSEMBLIES!!

I tried flipping the motor gear  - SAME thing - keeps coming off the end pulley at top.....

I then read  - http://reprap.org/wiki/Rostock#Belts

Belts

It can be challenging to get good belt tension. You should be able to pluck nice bass tones on the belts. Here is Johann's tensioning method:
  • Make sure you don't have a flange on the outer idler bearing (the one that is facing you).
  • Put timing belt on motor pulley and idler bearings.
  • Push idler end up as far as possible with one hand.
  • Remove belt from idler bearings.
  • Push idler end up 3 mm more and tighten screws on smooth rod.
  • Put timing belt on idler again. It will be very tight.
  • The idler bearings are tilted 2 degrees upwards, so your belt should not fall off even though the outer bearing has no flange.
  • If the belt does fall off, reduce belt tension slightly, or print a new idler end with increased upward tilt...

Important note - last two statements -

  • The idler bearings are tilted 2 degrees upwards, so your belt should not fall off even though the outer bearing has no flange.
  • If the belt does fall off, reduce belt tension slightly, or print a new idler end with increased upward tilt.

I did not know there was a slight angle - also noticed the screw holes where the endstop will mount - I INSTALLED ALL THREE END PULLEYS UPSIDE DOWN!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHHAAA!!

Flipped them 180 degrees AND WORKS LIKE A CHARM - belts not coming off!!!

Assemblying the Airtripper Bowden Extruder -

Beginning to build the airtripper extruder body modified to accept an M5 4mm pushfit connector and the two mounting holes were sized down to 5mm as well.

Had to reference this site for similar assembly instructions - http://airtripper.com/367/3d-printer-surgery-4-extruder-upgrade-part-3/

It should look just like this one when complete.

When I assembled mine if found a potential issue - seems like my shaft is too short because the small bearing shown in other models is pressed onto the shaft - I just moved the pinch bearing further down the shaft so that it is in line with the lever with bearing to pinch the filament.
Hopefully will work.

Here is a youtube video of how HOPEFULLY it will work - video by the creator - Johann Rocholl

received tracking number to screw kit by TrDprinting - PRETTY DARN FAST - on a saturday!!

Rough picture of boards cut and tracks on.

Here is a rough image of what the cut boards look like..

Will have to add about 6 inches to the bottom to hold all my electronics and wiring...

ATX PC Power Supply, Carriage arms

While waiting on my screw kit from TridPrinting I did the following:

Connected 2 X 12V  ( P2 Connector )connections from an extra ATX PC Power supply, I had laying around the shop, These goto the two 12V INPUT connectors on the Ramps 1.4 Board.
WORKS PERFECTLY!!

Crossed out PS On connector to GND on the 13th and 14th pins on the ATX 20 pin moles connector.

Super glued Carriage arms so they were completely flat on both ends.
Did test mount of the Idler Pully bearings and Motor mount with screws I had laying around the shop.
These will be replaced once screw kit comes in......

Loading Firmware on arduino ramps 1.4 and my lcd display

I had EXTREME difficulty following and configuring the default marlin firmware -

I tried till the wee hours in the morning but I kept getting cascading compile error in the arduino ide.

I finally found a elegant solution - followed instructions on webpage -

    Rostock 3d Printer Frame

I have researched several different types of structures to build.

I have settled on KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid - concept.

This is the most simple one I can find. -

Rostock Modified Printed Parts Kit 3D Delta Printer PLA Chromed Rods Reprap
    COST $175.00

    KIT CONTENTS:

For sale is one modified printed parts kit for a Rostock 3D printer plus some of the other parts you will need to complete your printer. What you see in the first picture is everything you will get. All printed parts are printed in PLA except the bushings which are Taulman 618 nylon. The kit includes all the printed parts you will need to complete your printer, all bearings, belts, pulleys, and complete extruder hardware. You will still need plenty more parts not included in this auction to get your printer running. I added the last four pictures from one of my builds as a reference so you can see how some of the parts fit better.

Printed parts in the kit include:

    - 1 platform
    - 12 rod ends
    - 12 joints
    - 3 motor ends
    - 3 idler ends
    - 3 modified carriages with integrated gt2 belt clamp and clamps for the bushings which allow you to adjust tension on bushings.
    - 3 belt spreaders which allow you to use smaller pulleys while still maintaining parallel belts.
    - 1 adapter plate for hot end which take an M5 push fit connector .
    - 1 adapter plate for hot end that accepts j head.
    - 6 nylon bushings printed in Taulman 618 nylon. The bushings are dimensionally the same as an lm8uu linear bearing. If you don't want to use the bushings just use lm8uu linear bearings instead. The main advantage of nylon bushings is that they run quieter than linear bearings which you may find important on a fast moving printer like a Rostock.

    Printed extruder parts:

-1 airtripper extruder body modified to accept an M5 4mm pushfit connector and the two mounting holes were sized down to 5mm as well.
    -1 printed idler.
    -1 printed strut.
    -1 printed axle.

Non printed parts in the kit include:
    - 6 8mm x 762mm chromed rods.
    - 6 carbon fiber tubes which measure 5mm OD x 3mm ID x 232mm which gives you a rod length of 250mm from hole center to hole center (For best results use a jig to ensure all rods are equal length. Epoxy works well for joining the rods and rod ends).
    - 2 M5 push fit connectors for 4mm bowden tube.
    - 5 meters GT2 belt.
    - 3 16 tooth GT2 pulleys.
    - 1 pack M2.5 grub screws w/allen key.
    - 3 F608zz bearings (for idler ends).
    - 7 608zz bearings (3 for belt spreaders, 3 for idler ends, and 1 for airtripper extruder).
    - 1 MR105zz bearing for stepper shaft support on extruder.
-1MK7 drive gear clone w/set screws
    -1 M3 x 25mm S/S cap screw.
    -2 M3 x 30mm S/S cap screw.
    -2 M3 x 45mm S/S cap screw.
    -1 M3 x 6mm S/S button head allen bolt.
    -2 M3 S/S fender washers.
    -3 M3 S/S nuts.
    -2 springs.
-2 M5 S/S washers used for spacers between drive gear and MR105ZZ bearing.

You might notice there are no endstop holders included in my auctions anymore since only 3 endstops on the top of the printer are needed now and they mount to the idler ends. The only hardware included in this auction is what is needed to complete the extruder. The printed parts may require some minor clean ups as with most printed parts. I recommend running a drill bit by hand through all the printed holes. I inspect the parts before shipping but if you find a problem with something let me know and I can get you a replacement part out as soon as possible. I hope to keep offering a wider variety of parts in the future so if you are looking for something in particular let me know and I will see what I can find.

I will add more as I go along but HOPEFULLY this is the bulk of the order.

These last two items I ordered prematurely. Before ordering the printed plastics kit, I should have ordered it first then the rest of the parts.

Also, I had the arduino mega 2560 already from my prontobot project from before.
